HARPERS - How it began
In April 1867, three enterprising gentlemen decided to leave their positions as managers of the Borneo Company Limited to start up on their own. By pooling their experience and expertise Samuel Gilfillan, William Adamson and H.W Wood set up a company, Gilfillan, Wood & Co in Singapore. In 1886 Archie Charles Harper arrived in Selangor as its first European trader. He set up a company called A.C. Harper & Co. and his original business was that of an importer of horse fodder. He retired in 1907 but his business continued and between 1930 and 1935 A.C Harper & Co. and the interest of the Gilfillan group were merged. Thus was created the group known as Harper Gilfillan and those activities have spread form the original base in Singapore throughout Malaysia and Brunei. From then on, the Malaysian-side of its business was carried out under the Ewart Land Development Company (1962) Limited from 1962 and subsequently known as Harper Gilfillan (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd on April 15 1966.
The group diversified its business and the shipping & forwarding activities were carried out under Harper Wira Sdn Bhd in August 26 1977 when Koperasi Angkatan Tentera (M) Bhd as the main shareholder held 51% of the shares, Wallem & Co. Ltd (HK) held 39% and the balance of 10% by Tengku Dato' Zainal Rashid bin Tengku Mahmood. Harper Wira Sdn Bhd has an authorized capital of RM10 million and paid up capital of RM3.03 million with 8-branches in West & East Malaysia operating with about 130 employees. |
